79 latinoamericanos, a los que se unen algunos otros que forman parte de la Secretaría del Sínodo y que podemos decir se encargarán de tareas más administrativas, están en la lista de participantes de la XVI Asamblea General Ordinaria del Sínodo de los Obispos que ha sido divulgada por la Santa Sede este 7 de julio.
En la lista aparecen 51 obispos, 38 elegidos por las conferencias episcopales, el presidente del Celam, Mons. Jaime Spengler, 3 miembros de la Curia Romana, 6 obispos de nombramiento pontificio, entre ellos Mons. Lizardo Estrada Herrera, secretario general del Celam, y 3 miembros del Consejo Ordinario del Sínodo.
Entre los no obispos, son un total de 28, 10 elegidos entre los participantes de las asambleas regionales, 3 religiosas designadas por el Papa, dos representantes de los Superiores Mayores y 13 facilitadores.
También habrá dos latinoamericanos y una latinoamericana entre los 9 presidentes delegados del Sínodo. Se trata del cardenal Carlos Aguiar Retes, arzobispo de México, Mons. Luis Gerardo Cabrera Herrera, arzobispo de Guayaquil y presidente de la Conferencia Episcopal de Ecuador, y la Hna. María de los Dolores Palencia, religiosa mexicana, un nombramiento que es una total novedad en la historia de los sínodos, que una mujer ocupe ese cargo.
