The Pan-Amazon Ecclesial Network of Brazil (Repam-Brasil) will launch the campaigns on August 11, the campaigns "Amazonize Yourself" and "I vote for the Amazon", an initiative aimed at mobilizing communities, church and social organizations throughout the Legal Amazon to strengthen democracy, promote socio-environmental justice, and renew the commitment to caring for our Common Home.
The inaugural event will take place in the neighborhood Terra Firme, on the outskirts of Belém (Pará), a territory recognized for its strong community organization, its experiences in popular education, and its leadership in social mobilization processes. The choice of location responds to the purpose of building actions from listening to Amazonian communities and strengthening the leadership of those who daily face the challenges of the territory.
The initiative is promoted by Repam-Brasil in partnership with the Anglican Church, Brazilian Caritas, the Tela Firme Collective and the Ecumenical Service Coordination (CESE).
Commit to the Amazon
More than a communication strategy, both campaigns aim to become a broad process of territorial mobilization, civic education, and public advocacy, involving communities, schools, dioceses, social organizations, religious leaders, youth, and church networks throughout the Brazilian Amazon.
The campaign "Amazonize Yourself", created in 2020, invites each person to take a commitment to defend the Amazon and its peoples, promoting a comprehensive ecological conversion inspired by the Synod for the Amazon and the encyclical Laudato si'. On the other hand, "I Vote for the Amazon", launched in 2022, reminds us that civic participation and informed voting are fundamental tools for building a more just, democratic, and committed society to the protection of Amazonian territories.
The document of the campaign summarizes this purpose: "Caring for the Amazon is caring for life". Likewise, it states that both campaigns "unite faith, citizenship, and socio-environmental justice" to strengthen the defense of the Amazon and its peoples through an integrated agenda of mobilization, communication, and training in various Amazonian territories.
Strengthen citizen participation
The actions will be developed based on four major work axes: Territorial mobilization, popular education, digital mobilization and education for citizenship. The programming will begin after the official launch and will travel through various Amazonian states promoting in-person and virtual activities.
One of the first actions will be the installation of posters in streets, communities, and public spaces with messages about the protection of the Amazon, democracy, the fight against electoral corruption, conscious voting, and citizen participation.
The activity will take place in Belém, Santarém, Marabá, Tocantins and in the dioceses and regional offices of Repam present in the Amazon, seeking to bring the message closer to the daily lives of the communities.
Citizen training for youth
As part of the initial agenda, the film forum "Voices of the Earth", will bring together residents, youth, and community organizations to screen documentaries and promote dialogue spaces. The methodology will use audiovisual language to generate collective reflection on topics such as: climate change, deforestation, socio-environmental justice, democracy and conscious voting.
The programming also includes meetings in municipal schools of Marabá and communities of Itupiranga, aimed especially at young people, students, new voters, and community leaders.
These spaces will address topics related to citizenship, democracy, the Amazon, conscious voting, and youth leadership, promoting the participation of new generations in the defense of their territories.
Campaign built from listening
Another important component will be the so-called "Listening to the territories", driven by the Tela Firme Collective, which will conduct interviews and surveys in public and community spaces to understand how inhabitants perceive the Amazon, democracy, and citizen participation.
Among its objectives are giving voice to Amazonian communities, promoting dialogue on citizenship and socio-environmental justice, producing content for social media, and valuing the knowledge and experiences of Amazonian peoples. The campaigns will also have a strong digital communication strategy through the production of videos, interviews, reels, graphic pieces, and ongoing coverage of territorial activities. The mobilization network will include the participation of bishops from the Amazonian dioceses, artists, singers, content creators, communicators, and organizations from Repam, with the aim of expanding the reach of the message throughout the Amazon territory.
Additionally, all activities will be documented and disseminated through photographs, videos, social media, newsletters, press releases, and the campaign's website to give visibility to the initiatives developed in the different territories.
Amazon as a territory of life
The REPAM-Brazil emphasizes that "Amazonize yourself" and "I vote for the Amazon" are much more than informative campaigns. The goal is to consolidate a movement that strengthens the shared responsibility in the care of our Common Home, recognizes the Amazon as a territory of life, diversity, and hope, and promotes a citizenship committed to the protection of Amazonian peoples and democracy.
As summarized in the presentation document: "More than campaigns, we are building a social mobilization movement that unites communities, schools, organizations, religious leaders, and civil society in defense of the Amazon".
