Colombian bishops call for prayer, unity, and hope in the face of damage caused by a strong national earthquake

La Conferencia Episcopal de Colombia encomendó a Dios a las personas fallecidas, sus familias y quienes resultaron afectados, y agradeció a quienes participan en la atención y rescate. “Elevemos una sola plegaria por Colombia”, señaló, invitando a vivir “la caridad de Cristo con nuestros hermanos”.

El Servicio Geológico Colombiano informó que el movimiento ocurrió a las 7:34 de la mañana, tuvo magnitud 7,4, epicentro en San José del Palmar, Chocó, y profundidad de 103 kilómetros. Hasta el mediodía se habían registrado 18 réplicas, con magnitudes de 1,4 a 4,8. Más de 12.000 personas de unos 900 centros poblados reportaron haberlo sentido. La intensidad máxima fue de siete, asociada a daño severo.

El movimiento se sintió con fuerza en Cali, Pereira y otras ciudades del suroccidente y el Eje Cafetero. En Cali, el arzobispo manifestó que, aunque inicialmente no había reporte de víctimas humanas, sí se registraban daños en infraestructura, incluidos templos del centro histórico.

El arzobispo de Cali pidió mantener la serenidad y la confianza ante el temor. Recordó las palabras de Jesús a sus discípulos, “Soy yo, no tengan miedo”, y llamó a afrontar la emergencia con discernimiento y unidad.

Mencionó afectaciones en la Catedral de San Pedro Apóstol, La Merced, San Francisco y Santa Rosa de Lima, además de oficinas y viviendas afectadas. “Cali es resiliente”, afirmó, convencido de que “surgirá una nueva Cali”, y agradeció a quienes acompañan a las comunidades.

Convocó a benefactores y ciudadanos a disponer recursos para la recuperación de las edificaciones afectadas. Invitó a orar juntos y pedir la protección de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios.

In Pereira, Monsignor Nelson Jair Cardona Ramírez asked priests, deacons, seminarians, and religious to maintain strength to support those living in anxiety and pain. He announced that the diocese will coordinate with the authorities to serve the most affected people, after consolidating the official reports.

In Garzón, Monsignor Jaime Alberto Cabrera Arcos invited parish communities to trust in God and strengthen fraternity. The diocese asked to live this moment “with faith, solidarity, and hope,” placing in the hands of the Lord the affected regions and the families facing the consequences of the earthquake.

From Palmira, Monsignor Rodrigo Gallego Trujillo expressed his solidarity with those who suffered the consequences of the earthquake and called to recognize themselves as one family. “Let us not be overcome by despair or desperation,” urged, calling for unity to face difficulties.

El cardenal Luis José Rueda Aparicio y los obispos auxiliares de Bogotá, Alejandro Díaz García, Edwin Raúl Vanegas Cuervo y Germán Humberto Barbosa Mora, pidieron convertir el terremoto en un punto de encuentro nacional. “Esta es la hora de la humildad, de la concordia, del diálogo y de la paz”, afirmaron, y llamaron a reconstruir las zonas afectadas y los vínculos sociales.

In their statements, the bishops agreed on a common exhortation: to pray, accompany, and act in solidarity in the face of the emergency. The CEC requested to maintain closeness with the affected people and the dioceses expressed their willingness to join efforts with the authorities to address the emerging needs. it requested to attend to official reports while evaluations and responses continue.
