Pope Leo XIV appoints Monsignor Eusebio Ramos new archbishop of San Juan, Puerto Rico

The Pope Leo XIV appointed on August 6 Monsignor Eusebio Ramos Morales, until now bishop of Caguas, as the new archbishop of the archdiocese of San Juan, Puerto Rico. The announcement was received with joy by this particular Church, which highlighted this appointment as a moment of "joy, gratitude, and communion".

The designation came after the acceptance of the resignation submitted by Monsignor Roberto Octavio González Nieves, upon reaching the age limit established by canon law. The news was officially announced by the Holy See at 6:00 AM in Puerto Rico.

From the Metropolitan Archdiocese of San Juan, they noted that the announcement coincides with the Solemnity of the Transfiguration of the Lord, a circumstance that the Puerto Rican Church lives with hope as it begins a new pastoral stage under the leadership of the elected archbishop.

The archdiocese emphasizes that the new archbishop will take on a see with profound historical relevance for the Church in America. As the successor of Don Alonso Manso, he joins an episcopal tradition of more than five hundred years, marked by the service of bishops such as Don Juan Alejo de Arismendi, Cardinal Luis Aponte Martínez, and Monsignor Roberto González.

According to the statement, the arrival of Monsignor Eusebio Ramos ensures the continuity of the archdiocese’s evangelizing mission and ushers in a new era for the pilgrim Church in San Juan.

Born in Maunabo on December 15, 1952 and ordained a priest for the Diocese of Caguas, he completed his training with a degree in Dogmatic Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome.

In 2008, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the first bishop of the newly created Diocese of Fajardo-Humacao, known as the Diocese of El Yunque. For thirteen years he led its pastoral organization and promoted initiatives aimed at consolidating a Church with a strong spirit of missionary disciples.

In February 2017, he was appointed by Pope Francis as the fourth bishop of Caguas and apostolic administrator of Fajardo-Humacao. At the head of that particular Church, he promoted a synodal pastoral approach and, since December 2024, he has been serving as the president of the Puerto Rican Episcopal Conference.

Upon announcing the news, the Metropolitan Archdiocese assured that the appointment has been received with "joy, gratitude, and communion", in a climate of hope at the beginning of the ministry of the new Archbishop of San Juan.

With this appointment, the Archdiocese of San Juan is preparing to welcome its new archbishop, continuing a pastoral mission that has marked the life of the Church in Puerto Rico for over five centuries.
