On the occasion of the 488 years since the founding of Bogotá, the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Bogotá, Monsignor Germán Barbosa Mora, sent a congratulatory greeting to the inhabitants of the Colombian capital and invited them to renew their commitment to the sense of belonging, coexistence, and care for our common home.
In his message, the prelate highlighted the welcoming nature of the capital city, a place that brings together citizens from all regions of the country and visitors from around the world. Thus, he called to promote more fraternal relationships and to care for shared spaces as an expression of commitment to the common good.
A city to care for together
"Let us rejoice for the 488 years that Bogotá celebrates, the city of all, the city that welcomes Colombians, that welcomes pilgrims and tourists from all over the world," expressed Monsignor Barbosa, while encouraging citizens and ecclesial communities to "always want the best for our city."
Monsignor Barbosa emphasized that the commitment to Bogotá is expressed in the way its inhabitants relate to each other and care for shared goods. In that sense, he called to promote a culture of integral ecology that helps reduce pollution, noise, and other practices that affect quality of life.
Citizen awareness and hope
The Catholic leader concluded his reflection with an invitation to turn this commemoration into an opportunity to renew love for Bogotá and strengthen civic commitment. "May we live this celebration loving the city more, becoming more aware as citizens, and seeking better coexistence among ourselves", he stated.
He also recalled that Bogotá is also the setting for the Church's evangelizing mission and pointed out that everyone is called to contribute, from their daily responsibilities, to the construction of a more humane, supportive, and reconciled city.
