In a binational day, the Clamor Network Panama and the National Commission for Human Mobility of Costa Rica will unite their voices on September 17 to place migrant children and adolescents at the center.
The meeting will include the participation of migrants, organizations that support their processes, and agents of the Human Mobility pastoral care of Costa Rica and Panama. The day is part of the activities for the 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which is commemorated on September 27.
The theme for this year, proposed by Pope Leo XIV, is “Even one of these little ones” (cf. Mt 18:10), with which the Church directs its attention to minors affected by migration and flight. The message emphasizes their vulnerability and the need to welcome them and protect their dignity.
A border turned into a space of meeting
The route is planned to depart from the chapel of Our Lady of Angels, in La Loma, Costa Rica, and reach the border, where a symbolic gesture will take place. Then, the participants will continue to the chapel of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, in Canoas Internacional, Panama.
The border will thus become a symbolic space of meeting and solidarity, while the Churches of Costa Rica and Panama strengthen their joint pastoral work.
A celebration that gives a face to migration
The day will conclude with a Eucharist concelebrated by bishops and priests of the Human Mobility pastoral care of Costa Rica and Panama. With this meeting, the Churches of both countries seek to reaffirm their commitment to walk alongside migrants and accompany their realities.
The organizers call to live this day as “a united church that walks and works in synodality,” with special attention to minors facing migration. In this regard, it recalls the concern expressed by Pope Francis in 2017 about the vulnerability of migrant children, to promote closer pastoral support for them and their families.
