The Foundation Fé e Alegría of Brazil initiated the campaign “Network of Hope: Support the Centers of Fé e Alegría in Boa Vista”, with the purpose of gathering 300 thousand reais to allow the continuation of actions developed alongside migrants and refugees in Boa Vista, state of Roraima, especially with families arriving in the country from Venezuela.
The initiative aims to mobilize people, organizations, and allies to ensure the continuity of services that range from temporary reception to educational support and strengthening of economic autonomy. The funds will also be allocated to cover basic needs of the families served, such as food, hygiene products, clothing, and school supplies.
“Behind every person who comes to us, there is a story, a family, and the desire to build a new path,” said the president-director of the Fé e Alegría Foundation of Brazil, Father Alexandre Raimundo de Souza, SJ. As explained, supporting the campaign means contributing to making solidarity translate into concrete opportunities for those seeking to rebuild their lives with dignity.
Three spaces to support families in mobility
The work of Fé y Alegría in Boa Vista is currently carried out through three spaces that address different dimensions of the reality of people in vulnerable situations. The San Francisco Javier Social Center supports around 200 children and adolescents, mostly migrants and refugees, during their time out of school. The space offers socio-educational activities, food, academic reinforcement, sports and cultural practices, in addition to support for their families.
Another of the services is the Casa de Paso Padre José María Vélaz, which recently celebrated five years of operation and has served more than a thousand people. There, temporary accommodation is provided to migrant and refugee families who are going through vulnerable situations while they wait to advance in their processes of settling into other regions of Brazil. In addition to lodging and food, the house provides psychosocial support and guidance to facilitate families' access to the protection network and to integration opportunities.
The third initiative is the Entrepreneurship Office, specifically aimed at migrant and refugee women, including mothers who are the sole providers for their families. The program offers training in entrepreneurship, management, financial education, and leadership, accompanied by technical advice.
Network to sustain hope
The campaign “Network of Hope” proposes solidarity as a tool to sustain a support that goes beyond the immediate response to basic needs.
For Faith and Joy, the migratory reality demands responses that combine welcome, protection, education, and integration. That’s why, the resources raised will allow us to maintain the services and necessary conditions to continue supporting children, adolescents, women, and families in Boa Vista.
