The pain caused by an earthquake once again crosses two neighboring towns. In the face of the strong quake that affected Colombia on August 10, the Episcopal Conference of Venezuela expressed its closeness to the victims, the injured, and the families facing the consequences of the tragedy.
“The Bishops of Venezuela raise their prayers for Colombia”, states the message disseminated by the Venezuelan Episcopal Conference, which expressed its solidarity with the Colombian people and assured its spiritual support in the midst of the emergency.
The bishops asked the Lord to receive the supplications of those who suffer and grant them “comfort, strength, and hope” in the face of a situation that has left affected communities and numerous families facing losses and damages.
A country that knows closely the pain of an earthquake
The message from Venezuela takes on a particular resonance because Venezuela still carries with it the consequences of the strong seismic episode that occurred on June 24. That day, two earthquakes of magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5 shook the north of the country with just a few seconds apart, especially affecting areas like Caracas, La Guaira, and sectors of Carabobo.
The experience left serious human and material consequences. A report disseminated weeks later stated thousands of people dead and injured, along with families who had lost their homes and communities that continued to face the effects of the emergency.
Since that recent experience, the Venezuelan Church now joins the suffering of Colombia. The gesture expresses a solidarity that also arises from having gone through, as a people, a situation of similar pain and emergency.
“Colombia, you are not alone”
The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference invited to keep praying for those who have been affected and asked that the fraternity between both peoples translates into support. “May the fraternity between our peoples inspire us to support and uphold each other, especially in times of pain and difficulty”, expresses the message.
The Venezuelan Church concluded its message with an expression of closeness to the neighboring country: “Colombia, you are not alone! We pray with you”.
