Pope Leo XIV expresses solidarity with earthquake victims and discusses Colombia with President De la Espriella

The victims of the earthquake that shook Colombia on August 10 were among the main concerns expressed by Pope Leo XIV during a phone conversation with the President of the Republic Abelardo de la Espriella on September 2.

The Pope's solidarity was particularly directed to families facing the loss of their loved ones, to the injured, to those who have lost everything and to the personnel who, tirelessly, continue working in emergency response and humanitarian assistance.

According to a bulletin issued by the Press Office of the Holy See, the Pope and the Colombian president also discussed the situation in the country and the conditions of the areas most affected by the earthquake.

The conversation took place weeks after the earthquake that caused hundreds of deaths, thousands of injuries, and significant material damage in several areas of Colombia. According to the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 7.4.

According to the report from the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), 329 people died, about 4,600 were injured and 247 remain missing. More than 314,000 people were affected by the emergency, which had its greatest impact in areas of southern and northwestern Colombia.

De la Espriella had been in the Presidency for just three days when the earthquake shook Colombia on August 10. Weeks later, the president spoke with León XIV about the consequences of the tragedy and the situation of the communities that still face its effects.
