The Archdiocese of Asunción expressed its "deep concern" about the persistence of human trafficking and the exploitation of minors in Paraguay, through a statement released on August 2.
The Paraguayan Catholic Church urges authorities, families, institutions, and all citizens to redouble efforts to prevent this crime, protect victims, and combat networks dedicated to the exploitation of people.
According to the archdiocese, trafficking constitutes a serious affront to human dignity because "deeply wounds families" and demands a joint response from all of society. Furthermore, it emphasizes that the dignity of each person is "sacred and inviolable," so none can be reduced to an object of exploitation or profit.
Human dignity, at the center of the message
The reflection also emphasizes the evangelical message, reminding that Jesus showed a special preference for children and left a clear warning against those who harm them. Therefore, the statement insists that any form of abuse, violence, or exploitation against them demands the decisive rejection of society.
The archdiocese also refers to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which rejects any practice that turns the human being "into a utilitarian value or a source of profit." In the same vein, it recalls that the Social Doctrine of the Church identifies trafficking as a serious violation of human rights and the common good.
Likewise, the Church also quotes Pope Francis, who defined human trafficking as "a wound in the body of contemporary humanity, a wound in the flesh of Christ", and called for uniting the efforts of States, institutions, and citizens to combat it.
Recognition of the authorities and a call for prevention
Similarly, it states that human trafficking constitutes "an abominable crime and a sin that cries out to heaven for justice". In that context, it demands rigorous investigations, sanctions according to the law "always guaranteeing due process and the comprehensive protection of victims."
Furthermore, the Church expressed its recognition of the institutions that work in prevention, investigation, criminal prosecution, and care for victims. "Their work deserves the support of all citizens, because the fight against this scourge demands unity, professionalism, and perseverance."
The statement calls on families, schools, faith communities, and the media to take an active role in preventing this crime by promoting a culture of care. In this context, it warns that "digital environments can facilitate the grooming of minors and emphasizes the need to strengthen family communication and education".
As a closing to its message, the Church reaffirms its decision to strengthen prevention, protection, and support actions for those affected by these crimes. It also states that "indifference will never be a Christian response" and urges the construction of a society where "no person is reduced to merchandise".
