The Secretary General of the Colombian Episcopal Conference, Monsignor Germán Medina Acosta, highlighted, through a video, the solidarity response of Colombians to the earthquake of August 10 and called to maintain unity to support reconstruction.
“We continue to be pained by this terrible drama that the earthquake has brought, which has affected a large part of Colombian territory,” said the also bishop of Engativá. The quake, which occurred on August 10, reached a magnitude of 7.4, with an epicenter in San José del Palmar, Chocó, according to the Colombian Geological Service.
The solidarity that awakens hope
The prelate highlighted the participation of young people and institutions that have promoted aid initiatives. “The best we have, which is our capacity to love and to express that love through fraternal and solidarity help, has been awakened in all of us,” he stated.
In addition, he called to strengthen coordination so that resources arrive in a timely manner. “Our invitation is to take care of this aid more and more and to seek coordination in such a way that it is prompt, organized, and effective”, he pointed out.
From emergency to reconstruction
The executive of the episcopate called to look beyond the immediate emergency and to sustain solidarity efforts during the recovery process. “We will have to think together about how to sustain and maintain this solidarity aid for what we all say, to rebuild the country,” he noted.
The Catholic Church has also put its presence in the territories and its pastoral structures at the service of the affected communities. Through the Episcopal Conference of Colombia and the National Secretariat of Social Pastoral-Caritas Colombiana, the campaign “With Colombia, to the last corner” is promoted, aimed at strengthening care and channeling aid to those who need it most.
Prayer and shared commitment
